Abstract

High inrush current during irrigation pump startup remains a significant challenge in agricultural systems, causing energy losses, voltage instability, increased operating costs, and accelerated equipment degradation. In addition, the utilization of renewable energy in irrigation applications is often limited by the lack of intelligent energy management. This study proposes an intelligent solar-grid hybrid irrigation controller integrated with an adaptive soft starter and smart agricultural monitoring system to improve energy efficiency and operational sustainability. The developed system employs an ESP8266-based controller to manage power distribution between photovoltaic panels, battery storage, and grid electricity. Real-time monitoring is performed using PZEM-004T sensors for electrical parameters, soil moisture sensors for irrigation demand assessment, and solar irradiance data for energy availability evaluation. An adaptive thyristor-based soft starter is implemented to gradually increase motor voltage during startup, reducing current surges and electrical stress on the pump. The proposed control algorithm prioritizes solar energy utilization while maintaining reliable operation through automatic hybrid energy switching. The system is further integrated with an Android-based interface for remote monitoring and control. The proposed approach is expected to reduce startup current, optimize irrigation scheduling, improve renewable energy utilization, and lower operational costs. This integrated solution offers a practical and scalable framework for sustainable precision agriculture.
